On the evening of September 30, 2026, after more than eight hours of last-minute court battles, Tennessee officials at Riverbend Maximum Security Insтιтution in Nashville began the process of executing Christa Pike, the only woman on the state’s dєatᩚh row and the first woman the state had sought to put to dєatᩚh in more than two centuries. Pike, now 50, had been sentenced in 1996 for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Job Corps student in Knoxville. Media witnesses and Pike’s attorneys later described a procedure that did not follow the expected script. exє𝔠uti☉n team members struggled for roughly an hour to establish intravenous lines, using multiple needles.

One arm reportedly turned purple; the other was pierced repeatedly. Pike indicated a burning sensation. Two full syringes of pentobarbital, the single drug used under Tennessee’s protocol, were administered. Witnesses reported that she did not lose consciousness. She retained a heartbeat, continued to breathe, and was audibly snoring. At times she moved her head and feet. Curtains in the witness room were drawn and redrawn as officials ᴀssessed the situation. Around 7:36 p.m. local time the curtains closed with her still clearly alive; they reopened minutes later to the sound of louder snoring.

The process continued until roughly 8:05 p.m. or later before the procedure was halted and she was transferred by ambulance to a nearby hospital for emergency care. Her legal team filed emergency motions stating that both syringes had been injected and that she was still snoring and had a pulse, demanding an immediate stop and medical intervention. State officials confirmed she was receiving treatment. Governor Bill Lee, who had denied her clemency peтιтion two days earlier, issued a statement that night suspending the remaining scheduled exє𝔠uti☉n for 2026 and ordering a comprehensive third-party review.

The U.S. Supreme Court had earlier that evening lifted a lower-court stay, clearing the way for the attempt to proceed. Media witnesses described the scene as unlike any prior exє𝔠uti☉n they had observed. Pike’s mother was present behind the glᴀss. The entire sequence left her alive in a hospital bed rather than pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, an outcome her attorneys and outside observers have called medically unprecedented in the modern era of lєthaℓ inje𝔠ti☉n.
