The Spanish athletics community is mourning the loss of a promising young long jumper and sprinter after her dєatᩚh was confirmed following the devastating railway collision in Toledo.
A promising young athlete with a bright future ahead of her was among those who lost their lives in Spain’s devastating high-speed train collision.
Julieta Gallego, 24, died in the railway accident that occurred in Urda, in the province of Toledo, on October 28, 2026.
Her dєatᩚh was confirmed by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA), which shared an emotional tribute to the young athlete and offered its condolences to her family, friends and teammates.
A YOUNG ATHLETE WITH DREAMS AHEAD
Julieta competed for Madrid-based athletics club AD Sprint, where she was part of its long-jumping group.
She was also a sprinter and regularly participated in Spanish club championships.
One of her proudest sporting achievements was a personal-best long jump of 5.90 metres, recorded at the Spanish Under-23 Championships in Antequera in 2023.
Although she was living in Germany, Julieta had returned to Spain for a few days of rest when the tᩚraɢedy occurred.
She had celebrated her 24th birthday on October 9 — just weeks before her life was cut short.
HER ATHLETICS FAMILY PAYS TRIBUTE
The Royal Spanish Athletics Federation announced her passing in a statement, saying:
“The Spanish athletics family joins in the grief over the passing of Julieta Gallego, athlete of AD Sprint, in the train accident that occurred in Urda (Toledo).”
The federation also expressed its support for everyone close to her.
AD Sprint shared its own heartfelt farewell, describing the day as an extremely sad one for the entire club.
The club remembered Julieta as part of its athletics family and extended its deepest condolences to her loved ones and teammates.
RFEA president Raúl Chapado also spoke of the profound loss, saying that Spanish athletics was mourning a young life with so much still ahead of it.
A COUNTRY MOURNS AFTER THE DEVASTATING COLLISION
The collision involving two high-speed trains on October 28 became one of Spain’s most devastating railway disasters.
At least 69 people were reported dead in the latest reports, with many others injured.
The tᩚraɢedy prompted national mourning as families waited for news and communities across the country came together to support those affected.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
“YOU WILL ALWAYS BE PART OF OUR FAMILY”
For Julieta’s teammates, coaches and everyone who watched her grow as an athlete, her loss is difficult to put into words.
At just 24, she had already achieved so much — and had so much more life ahead of her.
Now, the sporting community is remembering her not only for the distances she jumped or the races she ran, but for the young woman whose place in their team can never truly be filled.
Rest in peace, Julieta Gallego. Your memory will remain part of Spanish athletics. 🕊️
