MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO MURDERING FORMER MICROSOFT WORKER, 44, FOUND DEAD IN THE RIVER THAMES
Nelio Gouveia admitted murdering Jennifer Symonds at Oxford Crown Court, bringing a major development in the case that began when her body was discovered near an exclusive riverside club in Henley-on-Thames.
A GUILTY PLEA IN COURT
A 45-year-old man has admitted murdering a former Microsoft employee whose body was discovered in the River Thames earlier this year.
Nelio Gouveia appeared at Oxford Crown Court on October 29, 2026, where he pleaded guilty to murdering 44-year-old Jennifer Symonds.
The defendant, who required the assistance of a Portuguese interpreter during the hearing, was remanded in custody.
He is due to return to court on November 20 for sentencing.
Three of Jennifer’s friends attended the hearing and appeared visibly emotional after Gouveia entered his guilty plea.
HER BODY WAS DISCOVERED NEAR A PRIVATE MEMBERS’ CLUB
The case dates back to the morning of March 6, when police were called to Phyllis Court Drive in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, at approximately 7:50 a.m.
Jennifer’s body was recovered from the River Thames near Phyllis Court, an exclusive private members’ club.
Specialist police officers and divers were involved in the search and investigation.
A post-mortem examination later established drowning as the cause of her dєatᩚh.
Thames Valley Police confirmed that Gouveia and Jennifer were known to each other. He was arrested on the day her body was discovered and formally charged with murder on March 8.
A CAREER AT MICROSOFT
Away from the circumstances surrounding her dєatᩚh, Jennifer had built a professional career in the technology industry.
She had worked at Microsoft since 2018, serving as a senior customer success account manager at the company’s UK headquarters in Reading.
Before joining the company, she studied physical geography at the University of Gloucestershire between 2000 and 2003.
During her university years, she also captained the hockey team.
Her career and personal life were cut short at just 44 years old, leaving her family and friends to grieve her loss.
POLICE SHARE MESSAGE FOR HER FAMILY
Detective Inspector Rob Underhill, from Thames Valley Police, said his thoughts remained with Jennifer’s loved ones.
He welcomed the guilty plea and acknowledged the loss suffered by her family.
Specially trained family liaison officers have been supporting her next of kin throughout the investigation.
Her family has asked for privacy during this extremely difficult time.
SENTENCING EXPECTED IN NOVEMBER
Gouveia remains in custody following his admission of guilt.
The next major court date is November 20, when he is expected to be sentenced at Oxford Crown Court.
For Jennifer’s family and friends, the guilty plea marks an important development after months of waiting for the case to progress.
But while the legal proceedings are moving towards their conclusion, the loss of Jennifer Symonds remains at the centre of the tᩚraɢedy.
