Boulder Authorities Reaffirm Commitment to Solving JonBenét Ramsey Homicide as Investigation Continues

The Boulder Police Department and Boulder County District Attorney’s Office have released an update on the long-unsolved homicide of JonBenét Ramsey, underscoring that the investigation remains active more than two and a half decades after the crime.

JonBenét Ramsey, who was six years old, was found deceased inside her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado, on December 26, 1996. The case was ruled a homicide and has remained one of the most closely followed unsolved cases in the United States.

Since the murder, detectives have reviewed more than 21,000 tips, letters, and emails. Investigators have traveled to 19 states and interviewed or spoken with more than 1,000 individuals connected to the inquiry. The effort continues to draw support from multiple agencies, including the FBI, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Colorado Department of Public Safety, the District Attorney’s Office, and private DNA laboratories across the country.

A central challenge remains the DNA evidence recovered from the scene. Officials describe the available sample as extremely limited in quanтιтy and highly complex. Further testing carries the risk of consuming part or all of the remaining material. In coordination with the CBI and the FBI, discussions have been held with private laboratories regarding the possibility of additional testing and the potential use of genetic genealogy methods. Those discussions are ongoing. Authorities have stated that when proven technology becomes available that can reliably analyze samples matching the characteristics of those in this case, further analysis will be pursued.

Recognizing the value of external perspectives in cold-case work, the Boulder Police Department also planned consultation with the Colorado Cold Case Review Team. The team is made up of experienced investigators, analysts, and forensic specialists from across the state who examine unsolved cases and offer recommendations grounded in current best practices.

In more recent years, the department has continued to issue periodic updates. These have included reports of new interviews conducted in response to tips, the collection of additional evidence, and the testing or re-testing of existing items using advancing DNA technology as the case approaches its 30-year mark.

Police Chief Maris Herold has emphasized that the crime left a lasting impact and that investigators will not stop until the person responsible is identified. She has stressed the importance of following every lead and maintaining collaboration with partner agencies and DNA experts.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty has similarly affirmed the office’s commitment. He noted that the murder generated years of questions and that successful resolutions in other cold cases have always depended on solid evidence. Additional evidence—whether DNA or otherwise—is still required to bring the case to a conclusion. He expressed appreciation for the ongoing partnership among the CBI, FBI, and Boulder Police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Boulder Police tip line at 303-441-1974, email BouldersMostWanted@bouldercolorado.gov, or call Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Officials have indicated they are not conducting media interviews at this time.

The investigation remains a stated priority for the Boulder Police Department as the search for answers continues.
