“I JUST WANTED ONE MORE DAY TO BE THE DAD HE DESERVED” – ROB BURROW’S HEARTBREAKING WISH FOR HIS YOUNGEST SON AND THE LOVE STORY THAT TOUCHED MILLIONS

The rugby legend spent his final years fighting an illness that gradually took away his ability to move and speak. But behind his extraordinary courage was a father who desperately wanted more time with his children and a husband whose love for his childhood sweetheart never faded.

Rob Burrow was a sporting hero who spent his rugby career proving that determination could overcome almost any obstacle. Standing just 5ft 5in tall, he became one of the most celebrated players in rugby league history, winning eight Super League titles with Leeds Rhinos.

But the greatest challenge of his life came after his retirement from professional rugby.

In December 2019, at just 37 years old, Rob was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), a progressive neurological condition that gradually damages the nerves responsible for controlling movement, speech, swallowing and breathing.

The diagnosis changed everything for Rob and his family.

He had been given an estimated life expectancy of 18 months to two years. Yet, true to the fighting spirit that had defined his sporting career, he refused to let the illness dictate how he would spend his remaining time.

His greatest motivation was never another trophy or personal achievement. It was his wife, Lindsey, and their three children: Macy, Maya and Jackson.

For Rob, one of the most painful aspects of MND was losing the ability to be the hands-on father he had always wanted to be.

Before the illness progressed, he had been an active dad who loved spending time with his children. He enjoyed playing with them, giving them hugs and being part of their everyday lives.

As his condition deteriorated, even the simplest moments became increasingly difficult.

In a deeply emotional interview featured in a BBC podcast series recorded before his passing, Rob spoke about how much his children inspired him to keep fighting.

He explained that they were the reason he wanted to remain strong and positive, hoping to be around for as many of their milestones as possible.

When asked about the hardest part of living with MND, his answer was heartbreaking.

It was not being able to be the father he wanted to be.

He particularly struggled with no longer being able to hug his children, play with them or read them bedtime stories.

He also expressed his hope that they would always understand just how deeply he loved them.

In an earlier interview with The Guardian, Rob shared one of his most heartbreaking wishes concerning his youngest child, Jackson.

“I wish I could have just one day with Jackson and be his dad,” he said.

Those words revealed the cruelest part of his illness: his mind remained completely aware, his love for his children never diminished, but his body increasingly prevented him from expressing that love in the ways he once had.

Despite everything, Rob wanted his children to grow up knowing that their father had always been proud of them.

He hoped they would be happy, healthy, kind to others and confident enough to follow their dreams.

Throughout the darkest chapter of Rob’s life, one person remained beside him: his wife, Lindsey Burrow.

Their relationship began when they were just 15 years old. They grew up together, shared their dreams and eventually built a family.

Lindsey was not simply his wife. She became his main caregiver, supporting him as MND gradually took away his independence.

As Rob’s condition worsened, she helped manage his daily care while continuing to work as an NHS physiotherapist and raise their three children.

It was an enormous responsibility, but Lindsey remained determined to make their family life as meaningful as possible.

Rob was deeply aware of everything she was doing for him.

In an extraordinary interview with The Guardian in 2021, he expressed his gratitude in a sentence that would become one of the most memorable tributes to their relationship:

“There’s something beautiful about being cared for by the only girl you’ve ever loved.”

The words were particularly moving because Rob could no longer communicate in the way he once had.

He relied on eye-gaze technology, which allowed him to select letters and form words by looking at a computer screen. A specially recorded version of his voice could then speak the sentences he had created.

Even when speaking became impossible, his eyes gave him a way to tell Lindsey what was in his heart.

THE FINAL MESSAGE HE LEFT FOR HIS FAMILY

As Rob’s illness progressed, he became increasingly aware that he might not be there to witness every important moment in his children’s lives.

He wanted to leave something behind that would allow his family to hear his voice and remember his love.

Before his passing, he recorded personal messages for Lindsey and their children using specialist communication technology.

One particularly emotional message was intended for Lindsey.

Rob encouraged his wife to find happiness and continue living her life, even after he was gone.

It was another example of how, despite facing his own devastating circumstances, he continued to put the people he loved first.

Lindsey later spoke about the recordings and the emotional difficulty of listening to them.

She also revealed that the couple’s children had been a central part of Rob’s final thoughts.

His love for them was something he wanted them to carry throughout their lives.

THEIR FINAL DAYS TOGETHER

In the final days of his life, Rob’s condition became increasingly difficult.

He was admitted to hospital with pneumonia, and his family knew that his health was deteriorating.

By then, he could no longer speak or move independently. Communication was largely through his eyes.

In her later account of those final moments, Lindsey described asking Rob whether he had had enough of fighting the illness.

He communicated his answer through his eye movements.

Lindsey stayed beside him, holding him as he peacefully passed away on June 2, 2024, aged just 41.

She later told ITV News that he had been surrounded by the people who loved him most.

The family had also made precious memories together during his final days, including watching their wedding video and recordings of their children’s performances.

Their children even painted their father’s nails, creating small but unforgettable moments of togetherness.

For Lindsey, those memories became something she would treasure forever.

A LEGACY THAT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

Rob’s impact extended far beyond the rugby field.

After his diagnosis, he became one of Britain’s most recognisable campaigners for greater awareness, research and support for people living with motor neurone disease.

Together with his close friend and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, he helped raise millions of pounds for MND charities and research.

Kevin’s extraordinary fundraising challenges, including running multiple marathons in support of his friend, became a powerful symbol of friendship and loyalty.

Rob’s story also helped inspire the development of a specialist MND care centre in Leeds, ensuring that his legacy would continue to make a difference to other families.

In a final message recorded for a BBC documentary before his passing, Rob left viewers with words that reflected the way he had chosen to live.

He encouraged people to be brave, face their personal battles and remember that every single day is precious.

“Don’t waste a moment,” he urged.

Today, Lindsey continues to raise their three children while keeping their father’s memory alive.

Rob may not have been able to see every milestone he dreamed of witnessing, but his children will grow up knowing how fiercely he loved them.

He once wished for just one more day to be the father Jackson deserved.

In the end, his greatest legacy was not the trophies he won or the records he broke.

It was the love he left behind — a love that neither illness nor time could take away.
